Wind Surfing on the Rhine

When there is enough wind on a weekend, the Rhine seems to be quite a nice spot for wind surfers from the region. You need to be an experienced surfer though because of the currents and the boats and ships.

Hi Nicola...having lived in cities by the sea, I've never thought about wind surfing on river...cool!

Hi Lisi! Thanks for your comment! You're right, it's not very common here as well. The area where I took this photo is one of the widest parts of the Rhine - it's about one kilometer wide here. So it's nearly like surfing on a lake.

Silly that a photo of wind surfing would bring back a memory of Europe. However, my only experience wind surfing was on a lake in Belgium. I had not thought of that in years. Thanks for posting this photo.

That looks like fun! But it's still a bit too cold here in Connecticut, USA for that!

ash - thanks! I wish I had a better zoom with my little camera. These surfers were a bit far away to shoot better "action shots". But I guess it's alright to get an impression.... :)

denton - it's something on my list, I'd like to learn. We'll see were I finally manage to do/learn it...

jenny - over here it's a bit chilly too. Also the water is a bit muddy because of the high tide and the rains. But the surfers didn't seem to mind. They're also wearing neopren suits.

Looks a tad treacherous to me. Lots of traffic on that river. They look like they are having fun though.

rob - yep, that's nothing for beginners. You really have to watch out.

adam - yes, the water is really cold and I don't think the wind made it any better...

anne - thanks!

sophie - thanks for visiting and commenting as well!

jill - it started a few years ago that we have regulars coming from outside the region to surf on the Rhine here. They seem to like it a lot.
