Basilica in Mittelheim in Fall

The basilica in Mittelheim is the oldest church in the Rheingau. The church you see nowadays dates back to the 12th cenury but it's built on fundaments from the 10th century. In the front you see the back of a sign stating "Jesuitengarten" - this is one of the names for the wine from Mittelheim (only vineyards in a certain area get this name - in German we call it "Weinlage").

Hi Nicola, I am researching my family tree. My ancestors came from Mittelheim to Australia in 1855. I am really interested in your photos. The ancestors that I am searching for are Idstein (or Itzstein), Low, Rothhaugst). If you know of any good german family researchers I would be interested. My email address is tipptruck@hotmail.com. Thanks.

From Australia,
We also have family who came to Australia from Mittelheim...some descendants are still living there.
Many have come from all round the Rheingau and it is delightful to see the beautiful old basilika on your site. Some years ago, we visitied this magnificent old building and were most impressed by the hand hewn bricks which form its walls, not to mention the many ancient statues.
Thanks for a delightful reminder.

Irene
